LFT President Reacts to Senator’s Letter on COVID-19 Vaccination Availability for K-12 Employees

The following is a statement from the President of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers & School Employees (LFT), Larry J. Carter, Jr. LFT is the largest organization of educators in the state of Louisiana.

“I’d like to applaud Senator Cleo Fields for the letter he sent to Governor Edwards today, requesting that Louisiana immediately expand vaccine eligibility to our teachers and school employees.

Throughout this pandemic, our educators have risen to the occasion again and again, despite the impossible job that fell to them. Unlike many other states, most of our schools have remained open this school year and teachers have bent over backwards to ensure that whether a child is learning from home or their classroom, they have the best possible education. It has become clear, just how essential our educators are, not only to their students, but to our state and our economy as a whole.

The best way to ensure that schools remain open and our communities can continue to function with some semblance of normalcy is to grant educators priority access to the COVID-19 vaccine. Therefore, we join Senator Fields in asking that K-12 school employees should be immediately added to Phase 1B, Tier 1 of the COVID-19 vaccination plan.”
