LFT helps refurnish flooded schools

(November 1, 2016) While many still scramble to get their homes in order after the August flood, the Ascension parish school district is also dealing with wide spread damage.

To help the schools affected by the tragedy, the Louisiana Federation of Teachers coordinated some resources to help replace items lost in the flood. Donations such as desks, chairs, book cases, printers, and projectors will help the parish give teachers the resources they need in order to have a successful school year.

On Monday, representatives from LFT and the parish met at Southeastern University to pick up the supplies declared as surplus by the university. They will be distributed to schools throughout the parish in the upcoming weeks.

Jill Guitreau, an LFT member and veteran teacher at East Ascension High School was ecstatic when she heard the news of the donations. “As teachers we cannot even express our gratitude for the generosity from the public, everybody came together to make it work. LFT has always been extremely supportive of our education institutions,” she said.

LFT also coordinated a consignment of surplus SLU furniture to assist Livingston Parish schools recover from flood damage.
