LFT on 2026 Constitutional Amendments

The Louisiana Federation of Teachers and School Employees surveyed its membership on the proposed 2026 constitutional amendments and adopted the following positions.


Constitutional Amendment 1

LFT opposes Constitutional Amendment 1 because it weakens long-standing constitutional protections for state workers and makes it easier to politicize state jobs.

Constitutional Amendment 2

LFT opposes Constitutional Amendment 2 because it is not just a local Baton Rouge issue and could affect school funding calculations beyond East Baton Rouge.

Constitutional Amendment 3

LFT supports Constitutional Amendment 3 because it creates a path to permanent salary increases, leaves retirement benefits intact, and addresses part of the state’s debt to TRSL.

LFT opposes Constitutional Amendment 4 because it could reduce local support for schools and shift more of the tax burden from businesses onto individuals and families.
