Louisiana AFL-CIO offers three scholarships

The Louisiana AFL-CIO will award three $1,000 scholarships at the 55th Annual AFL-CIO Convention, to be held March 15-16, 2010, at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center Hotel.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be high school seniors residing in the State of Louisiana, and have at least one parent who is a member of an AFL-CIO affiliated union (including the Louisiana Federation of Teachers and its local chapters).

Application materials must be postmarked no later than January 15, 2010, and mailed directly to Secretary-Treasurer Julie Cherry, Louisiana AFL-CIO, P.O. Box 3477, Baton Rouge, LA 70821.

An essay is required for consideration. The topic of the essay contest is “How has organized labor contributed to the middle class?”

The application must include a one-page cover sheet including the student’s contact information, an essay not to exceed 2,000 words, and a current copy of the student’s high school transcript.

The scholarships will be awarded primarily on the basis of the essay, but the required information will also be considered.
