Sister Simone Campbell speaks truth, justice at LFT convention

For 15 days last summer, Sister Simone Campbell toured the Midwestern United States on a bus with a group of nuns, speaking up in favor of a national budget that conforms to the social justice teachings of the Catholic Church.

Fresh from her Nuns on the Bus tour, Sister Simone gave a rousing keynote address at the National Democratic Convention, at which she reaffirmed her commitment to economic equality. When LFT President Steve Monaghan saw her speech, he knew that she would be the perfect keynote speaker at the Federation’s annual convention.

Sister Simone did not disappoint. In a very moving speech, she talked about the effects of our country’s ever-widening income gap, inviting people from the audience to illustrate the difference in income growth for people in different economic groups.

She also addressed what she called the “unpatriotic lie.” Our nation, she said, was not founded on individualism, but on our common responsibility to each other. Citing the opening words of the Constitution – “We the People” – Sister Simone that we are all charged with acting responsibly, but that we are all in this together and are obligated to help each other when needed.

Thanks to the Louisiana Democratic Party for providing the Your Tube videos of Sister Simone’s appearance at the convention. More of Sister Simone's speech can be seen here.
