LFT is putting together a list of all our displaced members. Right now, we need this list to help your school systems get you back to work as soon as possible. We want to know where you are, and how you are doing, and what is needed to get your lives back to some semblance of normality.

In the months - and perhaps years - to come, this list will be the basis for an online community of Hurricane Katrina survivors. We will compare experiences, give each other the support that only people who have shared a great catastrophe can give, and offer assistance as we all rebuild our lives.

Please complete the form. We care deeply about our members, and we want to keep our family together.

Payroll information for Plaquemines Parish teachers and school employees

All Plaquemines Parish teachers and school employees will receive their base paychecks for September and October. Checks will not include extracurricular pay (e.g. sponsorships or athletic duties).

Employees who do not have direct deposit should contact the Plaquemines School Board's temporary office in the Louisiana Department of Educaiton at (225) 342-1872 or (225) 342-1548 to arrange delivery of paychecks.

Twelve month employees who did not receive their August 30 checks should call those same numbers and provide their names, social security numbers and current mailing addresses.

A message from the Plaquemines Federation of Teachers leadership

Members of the Plaquemines Federation of Teachers &  School Employees:

During this time of great loss, the leadership of the Federation prays that you and your families are safe and secure.   Though we can’t restore your lives and homes back to the way they were prior to August 29th, we are able to provide you with helpful information and assistance to make the coming days and months a little less trying.

The Federation has teamed up with the Red Cross and AFT to provide as much relief as possible to the survivors of this terrible tragedy.  We will keep you informed of the latest news from your school district, as well as places to go for financial assistance.

Rest assured, the Federation is still your union, and we will be there for you. Our hearts and thoughts go out to all of you during your time of need.   Take care of yourselves and each other.

 Sincerely,

John Walker , PFT/SE President
Mary Ellen Hamner, PFT/SE Executive Vice President

A message from Board President Sharon Brannan and Superintendent James Hoyle

September 9, 2005

To All Parents and Students of the Plaquemines Parish Schools

We would like to clear up any and all rumors and miscommunications that might have occurred about the future of our 2005 - 2006 school year in Plaquemines.

We are cooperating fully with parish officials to make sure that we have safe, secure schools for our students to attend. Due to the amount of damage caused by Hurricane Katrina throughout the parish on both sides of the river and the numbers of emergency and rescue personnel in Belle Chasse, the estimated opening of schools in Plaquemines will not occur until approximately January. At that time we will open our three schools in Belle Chasse for all the students in the parish.

In the meantime it is imperative that all Plaquemines students enroll in school wherever they are. We look forward to the time when we are safely back in Plaquemines together.

Watch for further updates on louisianaschools.net and ppsb.org.

Please know that you are in our hearts and prayers in these challenging times.

Sharon Branan
School Board President

James Hoyle
Superintendent
