Larry J. Carter Jr., President of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers and School Employees, testified in the House Education Committee in strong support of HB283.
This bill sends a clear message, no teacher, bus operator, substitute, or school employee should ever be assaulted on the job and left wondering if anyone will take it seriously.
HB283 is about accountability and protection. It strengthens consequences for assault and battery against teachers and school employees, ensures proper documentation, and supports impacted teachers and school employees with the time and care they need to recover, including medical and psychological treatment.
As President Carter emphasized, when teachers and school employees are harmed, it impacts not just them, but the entire classroom and school community. Safe schools are essential for effective learning and for retaining the dedicated professionals our students depend on.
Louisiana’s teachers and school employees show up every day for our students. They deserve a system that shows up for them.
We want to thank Representative Candace Newell for authoring this bill.
