Cynthia Posey, LFT Director of Governmental Relations, testified before the House Education Committee on HB 818 (Student Assessment).
Assessment requirements don’t just “add up.” They pile on top of each other in ways that are hard to see, hard to track, and costly to the time educators need to teach and students need to learn. Families feel it. Staff feel it. Students feel it.
As amended, HB 818 would bring the transparency our schools deserve by requiring:
• Public posting of all state and local assessment schedules
• Annual review of locally required assessments
• District‑by‑district reporting from the Louisiana Department of Education
• Parent notification when schedules are posted or changed
When assessments are layered without a clear public picture, educators lose instructional time, parents are left guessing, and students lose meaningful learning time.
HB 818 aims to make the system more transparent, more accountable, and more respectful of the work happening in our classrooms every day.
Our members have been calling for clarity. This bill moves in that direction.
HB 818 passed out of the committee with amendments.
Special thanks to Representative Neil Riser for authoring this bill.
