The Louisiana Federation of Teachers honored three leaders who have made extraordinary contributions to the cause of public education in our state. The awards –Senator of the Year, Representative of the Year and Friend of Education – were presented on November 21 at the Federation’s 47th annual convention in Bossier City.

The Louisiana Federation of Teachers presented its inaugural Distinguished Partners Award to the Louisiana Budget Project. The award is designed to recognize organizations that work in concert with the Louisiana Federation of Teachers toward goals that both improve public education and serve the larger needs of our communities. The award was presented at the LFT's 47th annual convention in Bossier City on November 21.

(Baton Rouge – October 7, 2011) Saying that the recent release of letter grades for Louisiana public schools is an exercise in intellectual dishonesty, Louisiana Federation of Teachers President Steve Monaghan called on the state’s leaders to stop playing politics, engage in an honest dialogue concerning our the health of our schools, our communities, and our families, and then provide the resources needed to provide every child an equal opportunity to succeed.

The 47th annual convention of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers will convene at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 20, at Diamond Jacks Resort Hotel in Bossier City, Louisiana.

(Baton Rouge – August 16, 2011) Even though thousands of public employees are wondering how they will be affected by the proposed privatization of a state health insurance plan, Gov. Bobby Jindal and his advisors skipped a League of Women Voters forum on the subject Tuesday.

That left only opponents of the privatization scheme, including Louisiana Federation of Teachers President Steve Monaghan, to talk about the issue.

(New Orleans – August 3, 2010) A corporate funded organization that writes model legislation for state lawmakers was exposed for its anti-public education, anti worker and anti-democratic agenda at a press conference in New Orleans Wednesday. LFT Vice President Jim Randels, who is a member of the United Teachers of New Orleans, was one of the speakers at the press conference.

The State Department of Education has announced that the number of "Academically Unacceptable Schools" in Louisiana has risen dramatically, but assures the public that it does not mean our schools are getting worse.

(Baton Rouge – July 18, 2011)  A Baton Rouge District Court judge has ruled that a 2010 legislative act allowing the state board of education to waive laws for local school boards is unconstitutional.

The so-called “Red Tape Reduction and Local Waiver Empowerment Act,” which was one of Gov. Bobby Jindal’s signature bills last year, violates the state constitution’s “clear separation of powers,” according to today’s ruling by 19th Judicial District Judge R. Michael Caldwell.
