Six local chapters of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers received the Union Values in Action Award for improving the lives of members, enhancing the influence of the union and advancing the mission of public education.

This convention marked the eighth year that Union Values Awards have been given to LFT local chapters. The award recognizes the efforts of local LFT chapters to promote the union agenda and express commitment to the values that make the Federation the largest professional organization for teachers and school employees in Louisiana.

LFT President Steve Monaghan was re-elected as president of the LFT for a three-year term at the LFT’s 50th annual convention on Monday, November 24.

State Representative John Bel Edwards of Amite has been named the Louisiana Federation of Teachers’ Friend of Education for 2014. The Friend of Education Award is the highest honor that the Louisiana Federation of Teachers bestows on a non-member of the union. It is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to public education.

(Baton Rouge – November 3, 2014) A Louisiana Department of Education report boasting success for Louisiana’s controversial school voucher scheme amounts to little more than political propaganda on the eve of an election, Louisiana Federation of Teachers President Steve Monaghan said today.

Prompted by fears that the Ebola virus could invade Louisiana, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approved emergency rules giving superintendents the authority to close schools or send students home if threats appear.

Obviously the Louisiana Federation of Teachers is disappointed by the high court’s decision. After a district court ruled three times that Act 1 is wholly or in part unconstitutional, we had hoped for a different outcome.

LFT Positions on March 29, 2025, Constitutional Amendments

The Louisiana Federation of Teachers and School Employees (LFT) has carefully reviewed the four constitutional amendments that will appear on the March 29, 2025, statewide ballot. These amendments will have significant impacts on our state's education system, judicial processes, and budget.  We encourage all Louisiana voters to become informed about these important issues before heading to the polls.
